How to fix it

  1. If you store worlds or mods inside the version folder, back up your `saves`, `mods`, `config`, and `resourcepacks` folders first.
  2. Delete the affected game profile from your launcher, or manually delete its `<version>.json` and `<version>.jar` files inside `.minecraft/versions/<version-name>/` while keeping your data folders.
  3. Create a fresh installation of Minecraft and install your desired Forge version cleanly once rather than installing Forge on top of an existing Forge profile.
  4. Check your launcher's profile settings under custom Minecraft/Game Arguments and remove any manually added `--launchTarget` entries.
  5. Stick to a single launcher for managing and launching that `.minecraft` directory, as switching between launchers like PCL2, BakaXL, and HMCL can corrupt merged version JSON files.
