Mod conflictsSodium & Iris Crash: Cannot invoke BlockState.isOpaque() because adjState is null
What it looks like in the log
java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot invoke "net.minecraft.block.BlockState.isOpaque()" because "adjState" is null
How to fix it
- Update Sodium, Iris, and Indium together to the latest compatible builds for your Minecraft version (for Minecraft 1.20.1, update to Sodium 0.5.11+ and Iris 1.7.x+ along with the matching Indium release).
- If you upgrade to Sodium 0.6.0 or newer on supported versions, remove Indium from your mods folder completely, as newer Sodium releases include native Fabric Rendering API support and conflict with old Indium jars.
- Edit config/iris.properties and set enableShaders=false before loading your save to test whether an active shader pack's shadow or terrain pass is triggering the out-of-bounds occlusion check.
- Check the '-- Block being rendered --' section of the crash report for the modded block ID at that coordinate and update the mod that owns that block in case its custom baked model extends outside chunk bounds.
- If you are locked to an older modpack version and cannot update Sodium or Iris, temporarily disable or remove Iris to explore past the affected chunks without crashing.
