Fabric Crash: Could Not Create Directory (iris-reserved)

What the log looks like

java\.lang\.RuntimeException: Could not create directory .*iris-reserved
java\.lang\.RuntimeException: Could not create directory [^\r\n]+\s+at net\.fabricmc\.loader\.impl\.discovery\.DirectoryModCandidateFinder\.findCandidates

How to fix it

  1. Switch away from the broken standalone Iris profile by installing standard Fabric Loader for your Minecraft version, then downloading the Iris and Sodium .jar files from Modrinth and placing them directly into your .minecraft/mods folder.
  2. If you prefer using the standalone Iris Installer, run the installer again and leave the installation directory set to your default .minecraft folder without changing it to Downloads or another custom path.
  3. Alternatively, check the exact file path shown after 'Could not create directory' in your crash log and manually create the missing parent 'iris-reserved' folder at that location so Fabric can create the version subfolder inside it.
  4. Delete the old broken Iris profile from the 'Installations' tab in your Minecraft Launcher so you do not accidentally launch with the outdated directory arguments again.
