java.lang.NullPointerException: Rendering overlay

What the log looks like

java\.lang\.NullPointerException: Rendering overlay
The game crashed whilst rendering overlay.*java\.lang\.NullPointerException: Rendering overlay

How to fix it

  1. Open the latest file in your .minecraft/crash-reports/ folder and inspect the first 3 to 5 "at ..." lines immediately below "java.lang.NullPointerException: Rendering overlay" instead of relying on the short launcher message.
  2. If those top lines contain "{re:classloading,xf:OptiFine:default}" (such as inside FluidBlockRenderer or BlockRendererDispatcher), either remove OptiFine from your mods folder or change your Forge version to the exact Forge build listed in OptiFine's changelog (for example, using Forge 28.2.0 instead of 28.2.3 on 1.14.4).
  3. If the top "at ..." lines start with a mod package name (for example, "top.theillusivec4.curios" or "de.keksuccino.fancymenu"), update both that mod and any custom menu mods to their latest builds for your Minecraft version.
  4. If you use FancyMenu or another custom main-menu mod and crash when opening a screen, temporarily disable custom player entity elements in the menu layout or move the menu config folder out of .minecraft/config/ to test.
