PerformanceIllegalArgumentException: Backing buffer is using vertex format (Sodium Rendering Crash)
What the log looks like
java\.lang\.IllegalArgumentException:\s*Backing buffer is using vertex format
How to fix it
- Replace any experimental, development, or self-compiled test build of Sodium (or Embeddium) with the latest stable release from Modrinth or CurseForge for your Minecraft version.
- If you have Sodium addons installed such as Indium, Iris Shaders, or Sodium Extra, update them so their vertex rendering hooks match your installed Sodium version.
- Temporarily remove Sodium and load the world to move away from or break the nearby boat/entity if you are stuck in an immediate crash loop upon joining.
- If the crash persists on a stable Sodium release, binary-search recently added visual or entity-rendering mods to find which mod is submitting the wrong vertex format.
