Iris: GLSL Source Pre-processing Failed (Bad Token "#")

What it looks like in the log

org.anarres.cpp.InternalException: Bad token [#@<so>,43]:"#"

How to fix it

  1. Open Options > Video Settings > Shader Packs in-game and switch to another shader pack or turn shaders off to dismiss the error.
  2. Update the failing shader pack (such as Photon Shaders) to its newest release or latest GitHub development build, as shader devs frequently patch strict Iris preprocessor syntax errors.
  3. Open your .minecraft/shaderpacks folder and delete the .txt settings file matching the shader pack's name (for example, photon.zip.txt) in case a custom setting enabled a broken macro branch.
  4. Update Iris and Sodium to the latest release for your Minecraft version, or roll back to the previous release of the shader pack if a recent shader update introduced the syntax bug.
