Launcher problems

Launcher Crash: java.lang.InternalError: Should not get here

What the log looks like

java\.lang\.InternalError: Should not get here
Caused by: java\.lang\.InternalError: Should not get here[\s\S]{0,120}sun\.nio\.fs\.WindowsNativeDispatcher\.GetFinalPathNameByHandle

How to fix it

  1. Open Windows Settings > Apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features) and uninstall your current outdated Java 8 installation so the launcher stops using it as the default system Java.
  2. Download and install BellSoft Liberica Full JRE 17 (or Full JRE 21) 64-bit (.msi) for Windows, making sure to pick the 'Full' package because HMCL requires bundled JavaFX support.
  3. Launch HMCL again so it starts on the new Java 17+ runtime, then update HMCL to its latest version in the launcher settings.
  4. If you play older Minecraft versions (1.16.5 and earlier) that require Java 8, let HMCL download a separate game-only Java 8 runtime from its settings menu rather than setting Java 8 as your default Windows Java.
