Iris Shaders Crash: Index Out of Bounds in PackDirectives

What it looks like in the log

java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: Index 9 out of bounds for length 8

How to fix it

  1. Open your Minecraft instance folder, navigate to config/iris.properties in a text editor, and set enableShaders=false (or clear the shaderPack= line) so the game can launch without crashing.
  2. Update the Iris mod (along with Sodium, if required by the newer Iris build) to the latest version available for your Minecraft version, where support for extra color buffers and crash prevention have been added.
  3. If you are locked to an older version of Iris by a modpack and cannot update it, remove the incompatible shader pack from your shaderpacks folder and use an older or lighter shader pack that uses 8 or fewer color buffers.
